Jam #6
Theme: A jolly, whimsical gnome
Song: In the Midst of the Mumbling Forest
Explanation: This may just be my favorite song in terms of music theory madness! Not only did I use a i7-vii7-bII7 progression (with the latter two chords both using a flat second!) but I then use this bII7 to modulate by a tritone, from Dm to Ab! And the violin... Oh, the violin... How it keeps consistency throughout the entire song by only using 2 notes! 2 NOTES! 2 notes for 6 chords, of which 3 in Dm and 3 in Ab. Music theory is beautiful, you can't convince me otherwise.
Oh, I got a bit distracted. I used instruments that invoke a sense of forest to me, such as a violin, low marimba, pizzicato bass, and woodwinds. The harp adds a sense of magic, since I wanted my beautiful tritone modulation to feel mystical. It was designed to feel like you're walking through the forest and suddenly - oh - there it is! In the midst of the Mumbling forest, I just found the town of the gnomes!
Learnings: I tried some new things:
- A tritone modulation, using the bII7 "tritone-substitution" chord!
- My first time using a "riser" sound, I believe it's called.
- I used more time to finetune the sounds and mixing than usual.
